What are the differences between China A Shares, China B Shares, H Shares and Red Chip?

• “A Shares” refer to companies incorporated and listed in Mainland China markets. These shares are quoted and traded in RMB and participants must be Mainland China’s domestic investors or the investors via Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect and Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect.
• “B Shares” refer to companies incorporated in and traded in Mainland China's B Shares markets i.e. in Shanghai and Shenzhen. B Shares are quoted and traded in foreign currencies and participants are mainly foreign investors. However, Mainland investors with legitimate foreign currency accounts are also allowed to participate.
• “H Shares” refer to companies incorporated in China that are approved by the China Securities Regulatory Commission to list in HKEx. H shares are quoted and traded in HKD.
• “Red Chips” (China Affiliated) generally refer to Hong Kong-listed companies in which at least 35 per cent of shares are controlled, either directly or indirectly, by the central, provincial and municipal governments of Mainland China. These companies are incorporated in Hong Kong or overseas instead of Mainland China.
